10 reasons I will pass over or stop reading a piece of fanfiction:

  1. Horrible title or “Untitled” - I don’t trust you to write a story if you can’t come up with a suitable title. I know they can’t all be “Calamity Jane Meets Dr. Isles, Medicine Woman” but come on, give it some thought.

  2. Grammatical/spelling errors in the summary.

  3. Lack of a summary - I don’t trust you to write a full story if you can’t figure out how to summarize it.

  4. If you write an author’s note longer than a paragraph on more than one chapter, I will stop reading. I don’t honestly care. If you have to explain something in the story in your author’s notes, you’re doing it wrong.

  5. If you write anything along the lines of, “I have the next update ready but you won’t get it until I get more reviews!” I will immediately stop reading your current story and all future stories you write. It’s tacky and desperate. Don’t do it.

  6. If you have the characters acting/speaking completely OOC, I’ll probably review to let you know and then move on to something else. No, I don’t buy that Jane Rizzoli would propose on her first date with Maura. No, I don’t buy that Kate Beckett is a virgin. No, I don’t consider Regina and Emma getting married and having blonde twin babies all that plausible. (But #6 is more of a person preference thing.)

  7. Do not say when you are going to update next unless you have the next chapter finished and are sure you will be posting it. Your readers get attached and will be anxiously awaiting the next installment if you’re doing it right. Do not lie to them and keep them waiting. Delays happen but if you’re promising a new chapter every week and you’re only posting every month, you’re going to lose readers.

  8. Don’t just abandon your stories without explanation. I’m far less likely to read anything else you write if you just stop in the middle of something. No one wants to get 30 chapters into a really good story only to be left hanging.

  9. Proofreading is your friend and you should get your other friends in on it, too. You may not be able to catch some of your own simple mistakes but a beta reader could. I can’t read and enjoy a story that I’m mentally marking up with a giant red pen.

  10. The thesaurus can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Know when you’ve gone too far. Verbose or concise - try to find a happy medium when it comes to fanfiction.

Took 3 years to TNT understand that Rizzles is real and that Jane and Maura should be a couple. After that they made a Tumblr…

I’m gonna sit in front of my computer waiting for an official ABC Swan Queen tumblr
